'Complete streets' law passed by city committee

By KATIE ZEMTSEFF
Journal Staff Reporter

The Seattle Department of Transportation must consider all users when designing or reconstructing streets, according to complete streets legislation passed yesterday by the City Transportation Committee. The ordinance has to be approved by the Seattle City Council on Monday before becoming law.

The ordinance will change how SDOT considers street design. It says before major street construction, the agency must determine first if a route is being optimized by vehicles, freight traffic, bicycles and pedestrians. Streets must be redesigned before renovation if they do not meet the requirements of users.
