Viaduct's south end design tweaked to help freight traffic

A new u-shaped bypass — nicknamed the “U-tube” — would go under the elevated section of the viaduct as well as the BNSF tracks, just north of South Atlantic Street. The bypass is designed partly to eliminate blocking problems.

At two public meetings next week, the Washington State Department of Transportation will unveil a slightly revised design for the southern portion of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, between South Holgate and South Royal Brougham Way.
