From parking to a park

Jenniferlyn Chiemingo of Rain Fitness offered yoga instruction Friday in a South Lake Union parking spot that was reclaimed by Weber Thompson and The Berger Partnership as part of National Park(ing) Day.

The aim of National Park(ing) Day is to make people aware of the need for more parks by creating temporary parks in public parking spaces.

The Weber/Berger park was called “Urban Zen” and included coffee grounds that could be raked like a Japanese zen garden (donated by Kalani Organica and Caffe Vita), flooring by Bamboo Hardwoods, and a teak bench and chairs from David Smith & Co. Furney’s Nursery and Yellow Mountain Stoneworks also donated materials.

An estimated 31 Seattle parking spots were reclaimed this year. Event organizers included the Trust for Public Land, Feet First, Seattle Parks Foundation, Seattle reLeaf, Seattle Art Museum and San Francisco’s Rebar.
