The Seattle Department of Planning and Development expects to layoff up to 40 people in October due to a drop in permit revenue. The agency also is asking the union to more than double the number of unpaid furlough days in 2011.
Over the last year and a half, DPD has left positions unfilled and had several rounds of layoffs. The department now has 345 positions, down from 407 at the end of 2009 and 437 at the end of 2008. The agency also has cut costs by eliminating overtime, not hiring consultants, and reducing expenses for training and supplies.
