A play area for Westlake Park

SEATTLE — The Downtown Seattle Association is working with the city, Mithun and artist Kurt Kiefer to raise money to build an 800-square-foot play area in Westlake Park.

More than $90,000 has been raised for the $125,000 project. Construction should begin this summer.

This is part of efforts to provide more activities for families. DSA said 3,000 children live downtown.

The play area will have a rubber-like surface and netted sphere called a Geode by Goric that can be used by children up to 12 years old.

Deb Guenther of Mithun said the team worked with the Downtown Residents Council on the design and wants this to be a model for other downtown play spaces.

DSA said the play area will be evaluated after two years.
