Longview gets its 3rd squirrel bridge

LONGVIEW, Cowlitz County (AP) — A third squirrel bridge is going into Longview trees to help the arboreal animals cross the street without fear of traffic.

The Daily News reports the 12-foot, 72-pound aluminum bridge will be installed Saturday over Nichols Boulevard near R.A. Long High School.

It's the third squirrel bridge in the city since the Nutty Narrows was built in 1963. A copper-covered span was built in 2011.

The latest bridge was designed by retired Longview lawyer John Dick before he died of cancer last summer. It takes its design from Boston's Zakim Memorial Bridge, which appeared on “Boston Legal,” one of his favorite TV shows. The bridge was built by JH Kelly construction company employees.

The tree bridges and the Longview's annual Squirrel Fest are the work of the Sandbaggers Club.
