Costly design errors could delay 520 project

Two longitudinal pontoons docked on Lake Washington will be retrofitted with post-tensioned cables to help prevent cracking. The smaller supplemental pontoons are unaffected.

Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond yesterday said fixing cracked pontoons for the new 520 bridge will likely cost in the tens of millions of dollars, the project could be delayed and the state made mistakes in its pontoon design.
