Woodland Park Zoo plans to renovate and reopen the Night Exhibit in two years, bringing back exhibits with animals that are primarily active at night.
In a press release, the zoo said it closed the popular exhibit during the 2009 recession.
The Night Exhibit will reverse its light cycle during the day to accommodate the animals, which may include fruit bats, sloths and small arboreal primates.
The zoo will issue a request for proposals from design teams. Preliminary design should begin this spring. It is expected to cost between $3 million and $4 million to make the Night Exhibit building more cost efficient and engaging, with features that may include a night vision station and digital signage.
Funding will come from donors and Seattle Park District. The Nysether Family Foundation has already contributed.
When the Night Exhibit closed, some animals were moved to other zoos and others remained at Woodland Park Zoo.
The zoo is at 5500 Phinney Ave. N.
