COWI North America said it recently worked with the nonprofit Bridges to Prosperity to build a 216-foot suspension footbridge over the Chiguiri River for a rural community called Chiguiri Arriba in Panama.

Heavy civil contractor Traylor Bros. and local volunteers also helped on the bridge, which gives about 300 families a safe, year-round crossing to schools, health care, markets and jobs. Construction took less than two weeks.

For nearly half of the year water levels in the Chiguiri River make the crossing dangerous or impossible, COWI North America said in a press release.

COWI, which was formerly Buckland & Taylor, provides bridge engineering services worldwide.

The firm started work on the Chiguiri Arriba footbridge (shown here) this year and made a significant financial contribution to the project. Employees volunteered their time and funded their trip to build the bridge.

Bridges to Prosperity is focused on reducing rural isolation by bridging otherwise impassable rivers. Since 2001, it has constructed more than 200 bridges in 18 countries.
