SAAM closes for renovation

SEATTLE — The Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park will close Feb. 27 to prepare for renovation of the historic building, which requires critical infrastructure upgrades.

The museum will reopen in 2019.

In a press release SAAM said the renovation, including a small proposed expansion, is under review by the city of Seattle.

The museum needs at least six months to move its operations and art collection, and prepare and secure the building, before the renovation can begin.

The building has not been substantially restored or renovated since it was built in 1933.

Some landscape and parks groups have objected to the expansion, which would add more than 12,500 square feet of usable space.

SAAM said the expansion would alter the building's footprint by less than 3,600 square feet.
