Tacoma lawyer nominated for federal bench

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush nominated Tacoma lawyer Ronald Leighton on Wednesday to be a federal district judge in Western Washington, over the protests of the state's U.S. senators who have complained they were excluded from the selection process.

Democratic Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell plan to block the nomination with procedural moves unless the White House uses a bipartisan commission to choose a nominee to replace Judge Robert J. Bryan at the U.S. District Court in Tacoma.

Murray and Cantwell have been wrestling with the White House for nearly a year about how the opening would be filled.

The opening in Tacoma was created a year ago when Bryan took "senior status," a type of semiretirement that allowed him to significantly limit his caseload. He is carrying a full load until a successor is named.
