Boeing to design aircraft fuel cells

ST. LOUIS (Dow Jones/AP) -- Boeing Co. Tuesday said it got a contract to design a fuel cell-based propulsion system for an unmanned aircraft from the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Terms weren't disclosed.

The Chicago-based defense contractor said the system for unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, will use currently available automotive fuel-cell technology.

During the project's first phase, Boeing's Unmanned Systems organization will lead a team to design the fuel cell-based propulsion system and complete risk-reduction studies.

In the second contract phase, slated for 2003, Boeing will build and demonstrate the complete propulsion system and will build and demonstrate the ultra-long-endurance UAV platform that will use the propulsion system in the project's third phase.

The project is separate from a $460 million contract Boeing obtained in August for further development of an unmanned aircraft for the Air Force that would be capable of performing bombing raids.
