CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Nucor Corporation has completed the purchase of nearly all the assets of Birmingham Steel Corporation, including a local mill, for $615 million.
Along with the Seattle mill, Nucor has acquired mills in Alabama, Illinois, and Mississippi. The four mills have a combined annual capacity of about 2 million tons.
Nucor also purchased a corporate office in Alabama, a defunct mill in Tennessee, the assets of Port Everglades Steel Corporation and the Klean Steel Division, and Birmingham Steel's ownership in Richmond Steel Recycling Limited.
Nucor is the largest steel producer in the United States.
