$24M Oregon wind power plant proposed

LA GRANDE, Ore. (AP) -- A Roseburg company has applied to build a wind farm near a local golf course that would produce nearly 92 megawatts of power with 51 turbines.

Alpine Power Co. LLC wants to build the windmills two miles south of Buffalo Peak Golf Course on 1,544 acres zoned for agriculture use. The $23 million project would be the first in Union County.

The company brings its request before the Union County Planning Commission on July 28.

If the project is approved, the first 17 windmills will be installed by the end of 2004, said Joe Dent, president of Alpine Power. Those will tower up to 100-feet-tall.

Dent said the power is being sold on the grid. He declined to identify buyers, but indicated that some power will go to the Bonneville Power Administration.

According to its application, Alpine Power plans to build a 50-by-75-foot maintenance shed and six miles of internal roads. It would also upgrade nearly two miles of the nearby county road.
