State jobless rate holds at 7.6 percent

OLYMPIA (AP) -- Unemployment in Washington remained steady at 7.6 percent in September, the state Employment Security Department reported Tuesday.

The rate remained one of the nation's highest, but still trails neighboring Oregon, where 8 percent were unemployed when adjusted for seasonal factors. The national rate for September was 6.1 percent.

"The labor market is not getting significantly worse, but rather seems to be bumping along what is hoped to be the bottom," said Sylvia Mundy, the department's commissioner.
