KING COVE, Alaska -- The Aleutians East Borough is requesting qualifications from companies to design and construct a 17-mile road across rugged terrain.
The road is part of a $23 million project to develop a reliable transportation link from King Cove, a fishing village of 800 people, to the Cold Bay Airport. With its 24-hour runway, the airport is the remote area's only link to the outside world.
The borough wants to build a road leading from King Cove to a new boat terminal where travelers would board a hovercraft for a trip across Cold Bay to the airport.
The borough, which is akin to a county, published a request for qualifications in the Nov. 7 Daily Journal of Commerce. The notice states the RFQ is available at http://www.aleutianseast.org, and that proposals are due Nov. 21.
