TOKYO (AP) -- Under pressure by its largest trading partner to lift a ban on imports of American beef, Japan's government said Wednesday a fact-finding team will visit the United States this week to investigate the first case of mad cow disease on a U.S. farm.
The team of agriculture and health officials will leave Thursday and spend a week in Washington, D.C., Washington state and the Canadian province of Alberta, the Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement.
In a related development, Japanese Trade Minister Shoichi Nakagawa was expected to discuss the import ban with U.S. officials during a separate trip to the United States this week. Nakagawa was scheduled to meet with Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman on Wednesday, said a ministry official, Tamotsu Moriguchi.
