Retirement slated for USS Sacramento
BREMERTON (AP) -- The Bremerton-based fast combat support ship USS Sacramento will retire from service later this year or early in 2006, according to Navy documents obtained by The Sun newspaper.
That moves up the ship's scheduled decommissioning by at least a year. The Sacramento had been scheduled to stay in service until at least 2006. It would be the third Bremerton ship in two years to be pulled out of Navy service, taking with them about $60 million in payroll and allowances and about 1,800 jobs.
The change would leave Bremerton with two homeported ships -- an aircraft carrier and the USS Camden, a fast combat support ship.
