Utility cancels $1.8B coal plant in Iowa

    DES MOINES, Iowa — Interstate Power and Light on Thursday canceled plans for a $1.8 billion coal-fired power plant in Marshalltown, citing the economy and uncertainty over state regulations.

    Many in the Marshalltown area had welcomed the huge economic boost the plant offered, but others questioned the need for the power it would generate and the greenhouse gases it would produce. Last month a group filed a lawsuit seeking to block the project.
