    As the economy recovers, many businesses are looking at ways to expand, but that raises the tricky question of whether it's safe to hire new people. An economic reversal could mean another round of pink slips.

    One way for growing firms to insulate themselves from the uncertainty is to hire interns. Internships offer short-term on-the-job training for college students, recent graduates and career-changers, usually for below-market wages or college credit.
