Denny Brown, DJC president, has died

Denny Brown ran the family-owned business for more than two decades.

Denis Orton Brown died on Monday, Dec. 15, at age 78 in his home in Bellevue.

Denny Brown was president of the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce and successfully ran the family-owned business for more than two decades.

He was born Jan. 31, 1936, in Seattle, the son of Leslie and Priscilla Brown, and lived in this area his entire life.

He grew up in the Windermere neighborhood, and enjoyed playing football and swimming at the local beach club. He liked to tell about the time he bet a buddy that he could swim across Lake Washington. Friends followed along in a boat and when he reached the other side, Brown collected his winnings and got a ride back to Seattle.

He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1953 and soon joined the Army.

Brown was stationed in Japan and had great stories to tell of his time there. After the Army, he attended the University of Washington and was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity. After college he started working at the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce. He also played fast-pitch softball for years with a Seattle Junior Chamber of Commerce team.

Brown was a longtime University of Washington football fan and Tyee Club member, and attended many big games, including UW's Rosebowl victory over Minnesota in 1961 and the national championship victory over Michigan in 1992. He was also a long-time member of the Washington Athletic Club.

He and his wife, Mary Louisell Brown, raised their three children in the Tam ‘O Shanter neighborhood of Bellevue, where they lived for over 30 years. Brown enjoyed golf (and once made a hole-in-one) and bowling. He also loved fishing and later in life learned to fly fish with his son Matt.

Brown is survived by his wife of over 50 years; his children: Denise Meo (Victor), Philip Brown (Lucy) and Matthew Brown (Natasha); sister Lee Elliott; and five grandchildren: Miko, Madison, Sean, Chloe and Dawson Brown.

Donations may be made to the Humane Society of Seattle-King County, 13212 S.E. Eastgate Way, Bellevue, Wash., 98005.
