Narrows bridge will break ground Oct. 5

TACOMA -- A groundbreaking ceremony next week will mark the start of construction on the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

The state Department of Transportation has issued a notice to proceed to Tacoma Narrows Constructors, the project's design-build contractor, to build a suspension bridge parallel to and south of the current Tacoma Narrows Bridge. In July, WSDOT signed a $615 million agreement with the contractor -- a joint venture of Bechtel Infrastructure and Kiewit Pacific.

Financing costs will push the cost of the project up to $849 million.

WSDOT has also issued a notice to proceed to TransCore after finalizing a $9.1 million agreement with the project's toll system supplier and installer.

Work is scheduled to take about five-and-a-half years to complete.

The ceremonial groundbreaking will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at War Memorial Park in Tacoma, located at the east end of the existing bridge.
