Port of PA picked for pontoon project

PORT ANGELES -- The state Department of Transportation yesterday announced it will negotiate to use nearly 20 acres at the Port of Port Angeles as the site to construct pontoons and anchors for the $225-million Hood Canal Bridge project.

The DOT plans to build a graving facility, which agency officials say will cost between $12 million and $17 million and employ 100 people. The department still must secure environmental permits and negotiate a lease with the port.

The plan is to replace the east half of the bridge and retrofit the west half. DOT officials say the Port Angeles site is large enough to allow the assembly of multiple bridge pontoons simultaneously, which will provide for greater project schedule flexibility. The facility also could build pontoons for the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge replacement project.

The 41-year-old Hood Canal Bridge is 1.5 miles long and is the world's longest floating bridge on saltwater, according to the DOT.
