PORT ANGELES -- The state Department of Transportation will occupy more than 22 acres managed by the Port of Port Angeles in order to build a $12 million to $17 million graving facility.
WSDOT reached an agreement with the port yesterday, but must still negotiate a long-term lease for the space.
The facility will be used to construct floating bridge pontoons and bridge anchors for a $255 million project to replace the east half and retrofit the west half of the Hood Canal Bridge. The graving facility could also be used to build pontoons for the state Route 520 bridge replacement.
The agency will begin advertising bids for the expected $175 million contract -- which includes the graving facility and the bridge -- on Feb. 18. Bids will likely be due in late April. The project is slated to begin in August.
For more information about the Hood Canal Bridge project, contact Pasco Bakotich, assistant region administrator, at (360) 357-2658 or by e-mail at bakotip@wsdot.wa.gov.
