JUNCTION CITY, Ore. (AP) -- Authorities have scrapped plans to build a $13 million minimum-security prison south of here.
The project had been pushed back several times because of what prison officials said was a slowdown in the growth of the state's inmate population. But now officials say the project is being mothballed because of the state's budget crisis.
The 400-bed facility would have been located on 250 acres just east of U.S. 99 and south of Milliron Road. Plans to build an adjacent 1,300-bed medium-security prison in 2007 have also been scrapped.
Construction had already begun on two other state prisons, in Madras and Lakeview, and those projects have also been stopped.
