Washed out road will not be rebuilt

BRINNON, Jefferson County (AP) -- The Forest Service has decided not to repair a section of the Dosewallips River Road that washed out two weeks ago.

The road runs between Hood Canal at Brinnon to Olympic National Park.

The agency is deciding whether to build a bypass to reach two upriver campgrounds, the Elkhorn and Dosewallips campgrounds.

Two years ago, nearly 27,000 people visited the Dosewallips Campground in Olympic National Park. If road access is cut off, the campgrounds would be reachable only by trail. The campgrounds would become backcountry camps with fewer facilities.
