Monroe complex has most inmates

MONROE (AP) -- The Monroe Correctional Complex, with 2,355 inmates, has passed the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla as having the largest number of inmates.

Walla Walla has about 2,129 inmates.

There is $150 million worth of expansion planned for the Walla Walla prison so Monroe's time at the top shouldn't last longer than a few years.

State penitentiary spokeswoman Lori Scamahorn said that starting in August, several new buildings will be constructed at Walla Walla, including a new 768-bed close-custody unit, a new 100-bed intensive maintenance unit and a new 100-bed segregation unit.
