Project of the Week: Ed Erickson Theatre Off Broadway

Photos by Doug Scott Photography

The Ed Erickson Theatre Off Broadway, located in a former commercial garage on the Seattle Central Community College campus, completed a $1.3 million renovation last fall at 1524 Harvard Ave.

The interior of the 8,000-square-foot structure was demolished and the floor was lowered to increase the seating capacity from 88 to 140. The building also received seismic upgrades and more restrooms.

The structural framework was left in place, including the heavy timber roof trusses, masonry side walls and brick facade. New elements were introduced to provide a contrast in texture, color, shape and finish.

Large windows, installed to create a sense of connection between the theater and the street, allow passers-by to see into the theater.

LMN Architects worked with sculptor Doug Hansen to design a marquee with the theater's name. Visible from Pike and Pine streets, the marquee uses decorative glass and metal elements that were created as part of the city of Seattle's art in public buildings program.
