Father, son re-create Fort Vancouver settlement

    ORIENT, Ore. — John Platz and his son, Nate, wielded mallets and chisels in their country shop east of Gresham, Ore., hewing and mortising timber rafters for a replica historical house for Fort Vancouver.

    The pair are building the first house in a replica of an 1830s-era workers village. They expect to help re-establish that village west of the fort over the next decade or two.
