Long Island gas pipeline plan dies

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Two energy companies have ended their nearly eight-year effort to build a natural gas pipeline in Long Island Sound between Connecticut and New York.

Houston-based Spectra Energy and Westborough, Mass.-based National Grid USA are withdrawing their appeal to the U.S. Commerce Department to overturn Connecticut regulators' denial of environmental permits for the Islander East project, Spectra spokeswoman Toni Beck said Thursday.
