The Washington State Department of Transportation is gearing up to put European-style traffic management techniques on major roadways in Puget Sound. This means state highways are about to get smarter.
Soon, there will be signs above each lane of northbound Interstate 5 telling traffic how fast it can go. Other signs will explain what's happening further down the road. Messages will be controlled from WSDOT's traffic management center in Shoreline.
