I-5 bridges braced for earthquakes

  • Crews recently retrofitted 19 freeway bridges between Tukwila and Lynnwood.

    Fortifying the bridges involves adding blocks between girders and encasing columns in steel jackets.

    Granite Northwest crews earlier this month finished seismic retrofits of 19 bridges along Interstate 5. The $12.8 million project was part of an $87 million effort funded by the 2005 gas tax to fortify as many as 180 bridges in the central Puget Sound region.
