Construction has started on the $17.4 million David and Shelley Hovind Heart & Vascular Center, within Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue.

The 19,200-square-foot heart center is scheduled to open next fall. It was designed by TGBA of Portland and GLY is the contractor.

The center will have large rooms for surgery-related procedures, two electrophysiology suites, two cardiac catheterization labs, a hybrid catheterization lab/operating room, a vascular intervention radiology suite and an entrance with drive-through access.

Overlake said in a press release that it is the only hospital to perform open-heart surgery on the Eastside, and is building the center in response to a growing demand.

It said heart disease is most prevalent among men and women over the age of 65, and on the Eastside this population is expected to grow 30 percent in the next five years.

David and Shelley Hovind donated $1 million to Overlake Hospital Foundation for the new facility.
