BELLINGHAM (AP) — After a year of debate and a contentious public hearing, the Whatcom County Council voted 4-3 to allow slaughterhouses on farmland with only a building permit and state permits for waste discharge and water rights.
At least 75 percent of the animals slaughtered must come from Whatcom, Skagit or Island counties. The new rules discourage feed lots by limiting animal storage to 24 hours, The Bellingham Herald reported.
