$4.9M expansion for Vancouver church

Merit Construction Northwest is working on the final two phases of a three-phase expansion and renovation to Columbia Presbyterian Church in Vancouver at 805 Columbia Ridge Drive. The overall project value is $4.9 million.

The project should be finished in April 2014. It is adding 9,000 square feet and renovating 32,000 square feet.

Second phase work involves expansion of the sanctuary and fellowship hall, and construction of a new gathering area and site improvements. Old wood support columns were replaced with two 80-foot-long steel beams in the sanctuary, opening up the space and nearly doubling seating. An elevator will be added in the sanctuary lobby.

Lakewood-based Merit earlier this year finished the first phase, which renovated the pre-school.

Phase three began last month and involves renovations of an adjacent administration building for a new youth area.

Construction is taking place while the pre-school holds daily classes and the church holds Sunday services in the school gym.

BCRA is the architect and PCS Structural Solutions is the structural engineer. Both have offices in Tacoma.

Major subcontractors are: Tacoma Plumbing; Blairco Heating (HVAC), Vancouver; Patriot Fire Protection, Vancouver; Prairie Electric, Vancouver; and Ascendent (demolition), Pacific.
