The latest challenge to Bertha repair: 5 piles have shifted

  • The new estimate for the tunnel to open is August of 2017.
  • Digging the rescue pit to reach the broken tunnel machine called Bertha has stopped again, but this time it is not because of ground settlement.

    Seattle Tunnel Partners stopped excavation last Friday so that crews can remove five 3-foot-diameter piles from inside the pit. Excavation is expected to resume in two weeks.
