Skagit County is seeking a general contractor to build a 400-bed jail at Old Highway 99 South and Suzanne Lane in Mount Vernon that will cost about $43 million.

The 100,000-square-foot complex will have space for offices, a medical clinic, food service, inmate programs and a courtroom. DLR Group designed the jail to be expandable to 800 beds.

In addition to building the jail, the general contractor will finish site grading, paving and landscaping, as well as install security and detention equipment.

Bids are due Aug. 18.

A representative from DLR said a notice-to-proceed could be issued Sept. 22 and the project substantially complete in March 2017.

Wyser Construction was picked for site clearing, rough grading and limited utility installation. Wyser will also remove an old gas station and restaurant, and clean up any hazardous materials on the 10.4-acre site.

After the new jail opens, other county departments would expand into the old county jail at 600 Third St. in Mount Vernon.

DLR's team is R&N Systems Design, security and low-voltage; KPFF Consulting Engineers, civil; Halliday Associates, food service and laundry; JMB Consulting Group, cost consultant; Aegis Engineering, code consultant; and Aspen Design Group, landscape.
