Construction has started on a 57-unit apartment building at 1420 E. Howell St. on Capitol Hill, a block south of Group Health's campus.

The building replaces a pair of two-story four-plexes built in 1951.

Greenbuild Development of Federal Way is the developer and general contractor. Caron Architecture is the designer.

The new units will be studio apartments. No parking is planned, but the building will have bike storage in the basement.

Residents will cross a courtyard to enter the building. There will be laundry services and tenant storage in the basement.

The project is designed to earn a Built Green four-star rating. Opening is set for fall.

Greenbuild was formed by Vitaliy Afichuk, who has been in the construction business since 1999 and has been building luxury spec and custom homes around Puget Sound, according to the company's website.

Most of the company's activity has been in West Seattle, Capitol Hill and Ballard.
