SEATTLE — Sound Transit yesterday picked a site in Pierce County for an $80 million Sounder maintenance base. The site is between Steilacoom Boulevard Southwest and 100th Street Southwest in Lakewood.
The 40,000-square-foot base will have space to store and maintain 14 locomotives, 40 coach vehicles and 27 cab cars, and will be able to handle 10 additional vehicles as ridership increases.
It will have six maintenance bays, yard and ancillary tracks, material storage areas and offices.
Another Sounder south line train is starting this fall and two more are planned next year.
Sound Transit looked at six sites for the base. Lakewood was picked due to its proximity to Sounder railroad tracks and lower cost. Sound Transit owns the rail line in Lakewood and will likely need to buy only two parcels to build the base.
