SEATTLE — Bertha, state Route 99 tunnel boring machine, is set to take a scheduled maintenance break.
The Washington State Department of Transportation said on Thursday the machine is now 120 feet under Spring Street, near Post Avenue.
At 3,088 feet, Bertha is about a third of the way through its 1.76-mile route. Almost half its overall progress has been completed in the past eight weeks. Crews have now installed a total of 466 concrete tunnel rings.
Inspection and maintenance is expected to take several weeks. The length of the stop will depend on how much maintenance is needed.
