SEATTLE — The first of 31 old pontoons that supported the SR 520 floating bridge was set to leave its freshwater home this morning, and be towed through the Ship Canal and Ballard locks to Elliott Bay.
Pontoon E, as it's known, will then be transferred to a new owner, TrueNorth Operations Group, which repurposes pontoons for docks, artificial reefs and wharfs. The ultimate destination is unknown, though Virginia-based Truth North's website says up to 31 pontoons are available, individually or as a group. They are 60 feet wide and 360 feet long.
