$17M project will replace fish barriers near McCleary

A two-phase project to replace fish-passage barriers on Middle and East Fork Wildcat Creek will close the intersection of state routes 8 and 108 for two years. Work will take place near McCleary, in Grays Harbor County.

The $17 million project will replace culverts under Route 8 with four full-span bridges. New bridges over Middle Fork will be about 110 feet long and those over East Fork will be about 160 feet long.

Ceccanti Inc. will build the project. It was the lowest of 10 firms seeking the work, with a $10.7 million bid.

The project will improve fish habitat by slowing the velocity of the streams at the culvert sites. It also will grade the stream channel to simulate a natural stream bed. WSDOT says work at both locations will open up miles of potential upstream habitat.

Crews will close the intersection on March 30 and reroute traffic to the nearby Mox Chehalis Road interchange. Staring April 10, traffic on Route 8 will be shifted to one lane in each direction.

Work is expected to wrap up in summer 2019.
