Lewis/Cutler Construction started construction last month on Algona's new city hall, at 400 Washington Blvd. behind the existing city hall.
The new building will have a 5,000-square-foot community center on the first floor and the 6,000-square-foot city hall above.
Construction costs are estimated at $4.5 million.
City hall will have a service counter, council chambers, Public Works Department offices, open work areas, meeting rooms, a small kitchen/staff break room, and a new area for the mayor and his staff. For years Algona's mayor and staff have occupied a trailer in the parking lot adjacent to the old city hall.
The community center will have a large multipurpose room with a stage at one end. There will be a commercial kitchen, computer room, game room, privacy room, meeting room, and space for event staff.
One wall will open onto an adjacent park thanks to a large bi-fold sectional door.
Innova Architects designed the project as a LEED silver and Risk Category IV building, which means it could serve as a base during emergencies and disasters.
The city's police department will move into the old city hall after the new building is finished in early 2018.
