New pedestrian bridge touches down in Tukwila

SB Structures last week used three mobile cranes to put the Tukwila Urban Center Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge into place over the Green River.

When it opens in the fall, the 220-foot-long, twin-tied arch structure will link Tukwila Station to the Southcenter area. Tukwila Station, at 7301 Longacres Way, is served by Sound Transit Sounder and Amtrak trains, as well as Metro RapidRide buses.

The new bridge will tie into the Green River Trail to the west and span the river south of the Ramada hotel off West Valley Highway. It will connect to Longacres Way.

KPFF Consulting Engineers is the prime consultant and civil and structural engineer.

Here's the rest of the design team: LMN Architects, architecture/urban design; KPG Interdisciplinary Design, landscape architecture/urban design, lighting and electrical; Landau Associates, permitting, environmental and geotechnical; Watershed Science & Engineering, hydraulics; Universal Field Services, right of way; and Akana, construction management.

SB was the lowest of three firms seeking the job, with a bid of $6.29 million. The engineer's estimate was $6.55 million.

The project is owned by the city of Tukwila and is funded by a combination of city, state and federal sources.

A related project was recently awarded to Road Construction Northwest that will add bike lanes and parking to Baker Boulevard. That $800,000 job includes improving one side of Christensen Road with a combined sidewalk/trail that will connect to the Green River Trail. Work has not started yet, but is expected to be finished by year end.
