Summit Public Schools is getting ready to open its newest school, Summit Atlas, at 9601 35th Ave. S.W. in West Seattle.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Aug. 16 at the former church and Safeway store that Kirtley-Cole Associates is renovating.
The 23,700-square-foot charter school will open Aug. 21 to 350 students in grades 6-9. A future two-story addition of 23,000 square feet will provide space for another 350 students, in grades 10-12.
The overall project will contain several large open learning areas, smaller seminar classrooms, administrative offices, a lunchroom and outdoor play areas. Classrooms will have garage doors that can roll up to create a larger common space.
NAC Architecture was the designer. Pacific Charter School Development financed construction.
This is the third campus for Summit Public Schools in Washington. Others are in Seattle's International District and the Tacoma Dome area. Summit is tuition-free and open to all students.
