Skagit County wants to replace its aging diesel ferry that runs between Anacortes and Guemes Island with an electric boat.
The existing 21-vehicle ferry was put into service in 1979 and can carry 99 passengers on the short .75-mile run. In the last few years, haul-out and dry dock costs have increased substantially. Since 2014, the county's Ferry Division has spent nearly half of its annual $2.5 million operating budget on maintenance and repairs of the vessel.
