Skagit County looks at electric ferry for Guemes Island run

Skagit County wants to replace its aging diesel ferry that runs between Anacortes and Guemes Island with an electric boat.

The existing 21-vehicle ferry was put into service in 1979 and can carry 99 passengers on the short .75-mile run. In the last few years, haul-out and dry dock costs have increased substantially. Since 2014, the county's Ferry Division has spent nearly half of its annual $2.5 million operating budget on maintenance and repairs of the vessel.
