Sound Transit finds light rail cracks

Sound Transit maintenance crews have found cracks in a 1,200-foot stretch of rail south of Rainier Beach Station.

The affected section is where light rail trains cross Interstate 5 near Boeing Access Road. That part of the rail system is less than 10 years old.

Sound Transit spokeswoman Kimberly Reason said the cracking is uncommon and the agency is investigating the cause.

Crews will repair the tracks this weekend, which will require a one-day closure of service between the Rainier Beach and Tukwila International Boulevard stations.

Beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, trains will operate on a single track between the stations. Then, both tracks will be closed from 5 a.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday.

Commuters will be transferred to King County Metro shuttle buses that will operate every 10 minutes between the two stations during the full closure. Also, a special ST Express shuttle bus will operate between Rainier Beach and Sea-Tac Airport.

Service won't be affected between the University of Washington and Rainier Beach, and Tukwila International Boulevard and Angle Lake stations.

Full light rail service will resume at 5 a.m. Monday.

Reason said crews have found no other rail irregularities. They inspect tracks weekly.
