Bates Technical College and the state Department of Enterprise Services selected The Walsh Group and Schreiber Starling Whitehead Architects as the design-build team for the $43.7 million Medical Mile Health Science Center in downtown Tacoma.

The 70,000-square-foot project will be built where the 65,000-square-foot West Annex stands on Bates' campus at South 13th Street and South Yakima Avenue.

It will house Allied Health programs and include a simulation lab, skills lab and STEM facilities. Simulation labs include bedside computer charting stations.

Allied Health offers classes in nursing, occupational therapy, hearing instruments, dental lab technology, dentures, dental assistant and biomedical technology.

Walsh and Schreiber were one of three teams shortlisted for the progressive design-build project. They have started pre-design and programming.

Construction is expected to start in July 2019 and the new space will open in November 2020.

The DJC reported earlier this year that Perkins + Will did some pre-design work and Roen Associates did some consulting on the project.
