Ikea's big warehouse with a small footprint

  • Using a 100-foot-tall racking system means a 1 million-square-foot warehouse can be placed in a 646,000-square-foot footprint.

    Each aisle will have its own automated crane to move merchandise from the racks, allowing smaller aisles than in conventional warehouses.

    DISTRIBUTION CENTERS, like airports or shopping malls, can require a lot of land. Where land is expensive or scarce, one remedy is to build high.
