LINCOLN NEEDS $10 MILLION UPGRADE

Journal staff

The announcement this week that Ballard High School students will use the old Lincoln High School while their school is being replaced will mean $10 million in work for local design and construction firms. The $10 million will go mostly into the Lincoln's 90-year-old center section. Some work will also be done in the building's north and south wings. Improvements will include roofing, structural repairs, seismic upgrades, mechanical and plumbing systems, painting and flooring. A spokeswoman for the district said a construction schedule will likely be put together next week. The goal is to have the building ready for students to move into when school begins on Sept. 4. The district expects to have the bulk of the work on the center section done before the first semester ends. Students will attend class in the remaining portions of the building while work is under way on the center section. Funding for the project will come from $6 million earmarked for preparing an interim site and $4 million from the district's Building Excellence program. The district eventually hopes to renovate the entire Lincoln building for use as a middle school. That would cost about $25 million.
